Welcome Freestate Preppers!

As the newest moderator for Maryland’s APN board ,I want to welcome you to the new and improved Maryland site.  Maryland, long known for its blue state politics is not often associated with the prepping and homesteading community but many don’t look past our politics of the day and at our history.

Maryland earned the moniker, the Free State when many Marylanders gained national attention with their opposition to the Volstead Act which eventually brought about the 18th Amendment and Prohibition.  This was a big fight for states’ rights and for curbing federal encroachment.

Maryland is also known as the Old Line State, as commemorated on the quarter, for our Continental troops’ bravery under Genera,l and future first President under our Constitution, George Washington.  He was known to admire the bravery and staunch discipline of the Maryland Line as the troops were then called.  Maryland was also home to the first post Civil War combined arms division that shared units with a former Confederate state, Virginia.  The Blue and Gray Division would later gain prominence as the lead division of mostly National Guardsmen on Omaha Beach in Normandy on D-Day.  The distinctive blue and grey ying-yang unit patch represents the healing of the nation after the Civil War.

Next to Ellis Island, the Port of Baltimore took in more European immigrants than any other point of entry east of the Mississippi River.

During the Civil War, riots in Baltimore and Hagerstown, in defiance of martial law and President Lincoln’s threat of violence against the city of Baltimore from the guns of Federal Hill, broke out to protest the draft of citizens for an increasingly unpopular federal war effort that many Marylanders felt was a threat to state sovereignty.

Maryland was originally chartered and founded to, among other things, serve as a bastion of religious tolerance from the Puritanical Movement and totalitarian hold of the Church of England.

Marylanders, with a history like that, we can again become what those that came before us strived to create- a state for free men and respect for liberty, freed from the oppressive shackles of overreaching government. A state where men and women are free to exercise responsibility and self-reliance.  Welcome to American Preppers Network’s Maryland page.  Let reason, respect, and education prevail, and may we prepare to face whatever the future may hold with dignity, grace, and perseverance.

Lyrics to the state song, Maryland, My Maryland

The despot’s heel is on thy shore,
His torch is at thy temple door,
Avenge the patriotic gore
That flecked the streets of Baltimore,
And be the battle queen of yore,
Maryland! My Maryland!

Hark to an exiled son’s appeal,
My mother State! to thee I kneel,
For life and death, for woe and weal,
Thy peerless chivalry reveal,
And gird thy beauteous limbs with steel,
Maryland! My Maryland!

Thou wilt not cower in the dust,
Thy beaming sword shall never rust,
Remember Carroll‘s sacred trust,
Remember Howard‘s warlike thrust,-
And all thy slumberers with the just,
Maryland! My Maryland!

Come! ’tis the red dawn of the day,
Come with thy panoplied array,
With Ringgold‘s spirit for the fray,
With Watson‘s blood at Monterey,
With fearless Lowe and dashing May,
Maryland! My Maryland!

Come! for thy shield is bright and strong,
Come! for thy dalliance does thee wrong,
Come to thine own anointed throng,
Stalking with Liberty along,
And chaunt thy dauntless slogan song,
Maryland! My Maryland!

Dear Mother! burst the tyrant’s chain,
Virginia should not call in vain,
She meets her sisters on the plain-
Sic semper!” ’tis the proud refrain
That baffles minions back amain,
Arise in majesty again,
Maryland! My Maryland!

I see the blush upon thy cheek,
For thou wast ever bravely meek,
But lo! there surges forth a shriek,
From hill to hill, from creek to creek-
Potomac calls to Chesapeake,
Maryland! My Maryland!

Thou wilt not yield the Vandal toll,
Thou wilt not crook to his control,
Better the fire upon thee roll,
Better the blade, the shot, the bowl,
Than crucifixion of the soul,
Maryland! My Maryland!

I hear the distant thunder-hum,
The Old Line‘s bugle, fife, and drum,
She is not dead, nor deaf, nor dumb-
Huzza! she spurns the Northern scum!
She breathes! she burns! she’ll come! she’ll come!
Maryland! My Maryland!
